It is within minutes of the popular Kingsport beach, Houston’s Beach, Cape Blomidon beach and walking trails at the Cape Blomidon provincial park. It is also close to well-known and picturesque Cape Split walking trail, beach at Scots Bay, and the panoramic view of the Canning Mountain Look Off. The Minas Basin which is famous for the highest tides in the world can be seen from Canning and on many of the drives around the area.
In the surrounding Canning area and Annapolis Valley there are a variety of farming operations including: apples, potatoes, grains, vineyards, strawberry and blueberries, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, onions, beef cattle, dairy farms and poultry. There are several local farm markets.
Going a little further afield it is about a 20 min drive to Gaspereau Valley and many of the Annapolis Valley vineyards, Halls Harbour is well known for its delicious lobster meals, and Oaklawn Farm is a great place to spend a day with the children. There are many other walking trails in the area, some of which have specific nature themes.
Acadia University in Wolfville is only 15 minutes away with many sports camps running during the summer. It is also home to the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens.
Canning itself, is a small village with a history. At one time it was the largest shipbuilding community in Nova Scotia’s Kings County, you can visit the historical society building on Main Street. Now, it is a friendly town with a grocery store/liquor outlet, pharmacy, spa, art gallery, library, post office, and credit union bank. There are Baptist and Catholic Churches, Lions Club, Royal Canadian Legion and elementary, middle and high schools and a fire department which serve the community and outlying areas.
